I've been waiting all week for this to finally become available. I can't wait!

I'm going to upgrade it to a 128 GB SSD when I get it. It'll be a monster.

I want that voice-over guy to read me bedtime stories.
And in the morning, you would buy everything you come across. ;)

well it looks like i won't get any bonus for this bigadv unit i'm working on. my computer keeps losing it's connection (in windows, it disables my LAN connection, and i can't re-enable it). so i then have to restart the computer.

so i guess it's from the heat. i might have to run -smp 7 on the next one

That's too bad, yeah heat is bad.

First, Apple must build an iPhone that will work on Verizon's CDMA network (iPhone is GSM & HPDA), OR Verizon must upgrade their network to handle GSM/HDMA. I don't thing either will ever happen.

Isn't Verizon's 4G network going to be GSM?

on another note if it is wouldn't their coverage also be spotty?

I imagine they should be banned from MacWorld, but I also think it's the funniest thing I've seen today and absolutely hilarious. :)

well it's not looking very good. it should have posted a bigadv unit by now. and my number of gpu units are looking lower - which means that something crashed. man it only had 12 hours left on the bigadv unit when i left, and now nothing. it was folding way at around 34:30 per frame inside a VM.

    Bummer :( that's aggravating...

Is your dictionary still in print, and how would I order one?

Yes and Palm smartphones and Blackberries never existed before the iPhone.

Name anything that did not build upon previous knowledge.
The 'Apple hasn't invented anything' meme is such nonsense.
Making things usable and desired is probably the biggest invention possible.

And by that what do you mean. iPhones had little impact on phones like the BB Curve

Yeah... And how's that Curve doing?

In case you haven't noticed, they've redefined computing almost overnight.
What was the "old" definition of computing, and what is it now?

I realize that the discussion has gone off towards the relative merits of each format, but I'm going to go back to the original statement that Apple is going to support both...

This is non-news. Because Apple is involved in content creation (Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, etc.), they are going to support both formats so that people can author discs for HD-DVD and Blu-ray and create fancy menus, etc. It's no big leap to go from supporting authoring content targeted at both formats to supporting hardware to play and burn both formats.

$4,000 for a TV? Quoting an commercial for Circuit City or Best Buy(?) when asking people about "HD", one of the answers was "Wicked expensive...."

Just about any major electronics purchase at CC or BB is "wicked expensive". They're both known for listing large ticket items higher than MSRP. I paid $3600 for a new 71" Samsung from an authorized deal with white-glove delivery, they even called me a week later to see if I was still happy with it or if I wanted to swap it for something else. BestBuy wanted over $5K for a two year old 73" Mitsubishi or nearly $6200 for the same Samsung set I bought (price included delivery - ooooooh). MSRP on that 71" Samsung is $4,499. Where does BB (or rather the Magnolia Center in BB) get off charging a $1,200 premium over MSRP? ...Should be a law against that.

...But then again, other than the occasional DVD or small purchase I never shop there. It just gives me that sick to the stomach feeling knowing I'm buying something from a place that charges $100 for a $5 cable on a daily basis.

But the general consumer is oblivious to most of this. They don't understand the products, let alone whether or not they're getting a fair deal. ...Sad, really.

They were "called" smart phones. But the iphone defined the direction the iphones of the future would take.

iPhone did nothing new. It just took some popular features and combined them. It was more of a game changer due to it being made by apple.

The fewer the people in a nation, the easier it is to say they are the best or the worst in certain things.

So a ratio isn't necessarily a ratio, then? It depends on the population size?

So who is going to watch Snow White?

    No... Bambi?

Or what about Lady and the Tramp?

    :D

I would. However, would this be a bad time to mention I've worked for Disney before?

Steve Jobs' "PC is a truck" analogy was perfect. What these people aren't getting is that most computer users aren't nerds and hackers, but they've been forced to drive trucks all these years when they'd really be a lot happier with a Honda Civic.

PCs are to be used for tasks a nerdy kid would get beat up for talking about in school. That's the test I use. Everything else is better suited to the post-PC world.

And if you can make the PCs friendlier by adding post-PC features for the less technical tasks, what's wrong with that? It's a better experience for non-techies that have to use PCs for one reason or another, and who ever said hackers don't want to use nicer consumer-level software?

Thank you for reminding me of that analogy. It really is a good one, and your points are excellent. Nobody complains when pickup trucks and tractors get cushy seats and high-end sound systems, but add an app store to OS X and people are ready to jump to Windows! Silly.

Folks, there will ALWAYS be professional level PCs for you to do with whatever you wish. The hackers and geeks will have their hardware. That will NEVER end.

But as this post-PC era expands the market for computing devices, there are a lot of people who will be regularly using a computer who never did before, and they won't think of them as computers but just handy tools.

Every time there is this era change, the previous experts get all worried about losing their status as high priests of the current order. Too bad. The world moves on. And maybe one day I'll live long enough to see what comes after the Tablet era. But one thing I know will happen at that time: MacRumors posters whining and moaning about Apple ignoring their beloved iOS devices for this new thing that "isn't really a tablet!"

    Arn,

May I ask if you feel this feature has been useful so far. I really like the concept of a post rating. But I feel like this doesn't bring any real value to the MR community.

    Thanks,

    :)
It would be useful if they you reached a certain amount of upvotes you can get into the marketplace too. That'll help with actual contributing users that don't post much. The current system provokes people to just post quick short responses to raise their post count.

what a pitiful thanksgiving sale apple provided.

    nothing to wow about.

    You are correct!

I should go back to the Apple store, and give them $101 + the extra tax associated (making it $107.56) for the MacBook I just bought. Only because this sale is lame!

this case reminds me of the "apple walk of shame" last year, or the "p-p-p-powerbook case" back in 2004 (in the sense that you tell the story on the internet and other people give you suggestions, or share sympathy, or blah blah blah).

at first i was gonna reply to this thread, but i decided not to. but now it's so big it even made its way to Digg. so i'm 99% sure you won't get your box back.

not saying you're not careful (or negligent, whatever), but making such a big case out of it, and hoping there is no way the thieves would hear a thing about it... come on. even if there is a chance the thieves don't visit this site, their friends might do (or their friends' friends... and so on). fact is, it doesn't even have to be this site. it's all over google now. just type in "steal xbox" and the link to this topic will pop out right there. heck, who knows if tomorrow it'll be on CNN.

you can't expect to pull off things like the p-p-p-powerbook prank while spilling information all over the place. sometimes it's good to spread the story. but definitely not this time. i suggest this topic being erased (or hidden) until the case is solved.

    just my 0.02.
